The king's wrath grew, and he devised increasingly cruel methods to punish his son, believing that force could extinguish Prahlada's faith. However, the more he tortured him, the more resolute Prahlada became in his devotion.

As described in the Srimad Bhagavatam, Hiranyakashipu's arrogance reached a peak when he demanded to be worshipped as a god. He had received a boon from Brahma, making him nearly invincible—he could not be killed by man or beast, during the day or night, inside or outside, on the ground or in the sky. Confident in his power, he mocked and threatened Prahlada, who continued to pray to Vishnu without fear. The king's temper flared further, and he ordered that Prahlada be thrown into a pit of snakes, set aflame, and crushed under heavy stones. Yet, each time, Vishnu protected his devotee, and Prahlada emerged unscathed.

The tension escalated as Hiranyakashipu, now desperate to prove his supremacy, confronted Prahlada in his palace. He bellowed, “Where is your Vishnu? If He is everywhere, is He in this pillar?” As the words left his mouth, he struck the pillar with his fist, and to everyone’s astonishment, it began to crack. In a dazzling display of divine power, Lord Vishnu manifested as Narasimha, the man-lion avatar, bursting forth from the pillar. This transformation occurred at twilight, marking the threshold between day and night, a time that held significance for the impending battle.

The sight of Narasimha instilled both fear and awe among the assembled demons. Hiranyakashipu's bravado faltered as he faced this fearsome, half-man, half-lion form. क्षिप्रं भवति धर्मात्मा शश्वच्छान्तिं निगच्छति। कौन्तेय प्रतिजानीहि न मे भक्तः प्रणश्यति

"Soon he becomes righteous and attains eternal peace; O Arjuna, proclaim thou for certain that My devotee never perishes."
